Re: a decent analysis, I'd say

I'm not sure of lots of things, including what your point is. Mine is
that the U.S. population is not terribly receptive to a
left-of-center program, even one that our resident revolutionaries
would disparage as mildly reformist. Do you disagree?

come now doug, you're a public opinion guy, you know there's bunches
and bunches of longitudinal 'data' out there indicating that americans
are ideologically 'conservative' and operationally 'liberal', public's
views of social/economic issues/policies haven't changed much even as
identification with 'liberalism' has waned and 'conservatism' has
grown...
there is little consistency among among people who label themselves
'conservative' about how they define what term means or how it applies
to specific public policies, folks who label themselves 'liberal' are
more consistent in this regard...
on other hand, political 'elites' who think of themselves as 'liberal'
are more to confuse matters by muddying meaning of 'liberal' or ignoring
term altogether than are 'conservative' political 'elites' re.
'conservatism' (george bush's 'compassionate conservative' bullshit in
2000 being a notable exception)...
wasn't aware there were any resident revolutionaries on this list (or
in u.s. for that matter)... michael hoover (from water-logged,
wind-beaten central florida)
