There's also the issue of foreign involvement and
geopolitics. While I do not share the common Russian
belief that the US is behind the rebels, if you want
to call them that, it has been very plausibly alleged
that Turkey and Saudi Arabia are, or at least elements
therein, as a means to disrupt oil pipeline routes
and/or increase their influence in the Caucasus.
Turkey I believe has been trying to become the
hegemonic power in that part of the world ever since
1991.
