Near as I can tell, they did it for money.

A little while ago, while thinking about the fact that
Chechens were a minority in this group of gunmen (as
usual), a strange thought came to my head. I know it's
farfetched, but do you think it might just barely be
possible that these were some of the foreign "bandits"
Putin was using as a "pretext" for the war, you know,
the way the Soviet Union used the German "invasion" as
a "pretext" for declaring its imperialist aggression
against the Nazis?
