These particular guys were probably jihadis. But it is
not unknown for simple mercenaries to show up fighting
with them. Basayev's raid in 1999 reportedly included
Ukrainians, Balts and others, including an Ethiopian
with a German passport. I suppose they could all have
been converts, but I doubt it. It was $$.
