Re: query

From: "Devine, James" <jdevine@xxxxxxx>

where and when did Margaret Thatcher say "there is no alternative"? It's
not part of the standard Thatcher quotations found via Google.

Jim Devine jdevine@xxxxxxx & http://bellarmine.lmu.edu/~jdevine

It seems to have been her mantra from early on, and I had no luck either trying to track down her first usage. According to the Scotsman, TINA dates from her pre-PM days as Thatcher, Milk Snatcher:

" ... unlike Tony Blair who craves popularity, Lady Thatcher almost relished
her periodic deep unpopularity. When Education Secretary under Edward Heath
in the early 1970s, she was dubbed 'Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher' after
withdrawing free milk from schools. At the same time she first uttered her
political mission statement: 'There is no alternative'. "
