Re: naming that system
I don't know what Lebowitz means by the term, but I
think such definitions tend to leave out a very
important part of the Soviet system, which was the
blanket cradle-to-grave social security system and
from which it derived its legitimacy in the eyes of
the public. (Which, as far as I know, was mostly built
after Stalin -- there was unemployment under Stalin,
whereas it was illegal to be unemployed for more than
3 months under Brezhnev. Another good reason to junk
the term "Stalinist"! Or limit it to a certain
definite period.)
