Hi Daniel,
You may be right -- I am no expert. I believe Soviet
airplanes were the world leader in the 50s (I may be
wrong). The great virtue of the Kalashnikov is that it
is easy to make, shoot, and almost never breaks down.
That said, Sukhoi and MiG make superb fighter planes
to this day. (PS I saw Mikhail Kalashnikov in an
interview on TV recently -- he said that "I am glad I
was able to serve the Motherland, but I wish I could
have invented something useful to peasants, like a
lawnmower.")
