Re: Chronology of Russian-Chechen relations -- part two

In any case, I think we need to see much more detail on the 1917-1929
period-- proposals, programs, debates, conflicts specifically re
Bolsheviks
and Chechnya.
---
Near as I can tell, the Bolshies had a problem with Chechen raiders. Kind of like today. :)
---

And going forward, is there any information out there on specific
economic
changes post Stalin?  What were living standards like, economic output,
and
industrial worker population size 1973-1980, 1981-1986, 1987-1991,
1992-98?
---
Not information that would be easy to get in English! I'll do a search in Russian and see what I can come up with.

Just off the top of my head, I can say that the population was predominately rural (something like 70%). I think Chechnya produced high-tech equipment for the Soviet army.

We have to differentiate between mountain Chechnya and plain Chechnya. The highlands have a very low level of education and the population is rural (are there any large settlements in mountain Chechnya?). Plains Chechens are closer to Ingush (like my ex-girlfriend).

1992-1998 of course saw massive dislocation of the economy (why? Lots of bombs!). Chechnya had very little economy in those years other than subsistence farming, hostage-taking, oil smuggling, raiding, and counterfeiting. Like I've said before, the entire Chechen elite and intelligentsia left the republic in the early 90s. There is a huge diaspora of them in Moscow.
