90 percent? That cinches it. I will now have to defer to what they
think, just as I defer customarily to what the 90th percentile of the
American population thinks about undocumented workers, gay marriage, the Cuban revolution, etc.

You'd better make some attempt to understand _why_ they think what they think, and know some basic facts, which you don't. Or you can continue to substitute mechanical application of categories for thought and engaging in ideological autofellation, which is of course easier and oh-so-satisfying, though it can be a pain on the back.
