AUSTIN, TX.///February 5, 2004/// ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM), which long has been regarded as the global oil industry company in the deepest denial about the threat posed to shareholder wealth by global warming, may now be digging in even deeper by refusing to deal with climate-change issues, according to Campaign ExxonMobil, a coalition of concerned shareholders.
Campaign ExxonMobil members pointed to two troubling new developments that suggest ExxonMobil's transition to the "post-Lee Raymond" era may not result in the scales falling from the company's eyes on the topic of global warming. First, ExxonMobil has petitioned the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to disallow three climate-change resolutions that would otherwise be voted on by shareholders at the company's 2004 annual meeting on May 26th in Irving. Second, the company also is attempting to head off the resolutions by issuing a slick brochure, "A Report on Energy Trends, Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Alternative Energy," that appears to be a bid to satisfy the reporting requests featured prominently in shareholder resolutions to date…
