I agree with Lou that the Nation attacks on the left were despicable. I don't
believe, however, that the appropriate response is to demonize the Nation. I think
that we can be critical, but to treat them as enemies is a mistake.
The Nation is not just the people who write for the magazine, but a lot of people who
sympathize with the left, whose exposure on goes no farther than the publication.
Attacking the Nation merely alienates those people.
The organizers on the corporate right clearly understand the nature of class. I have
no idea about the mentality of the Christian right.
Part of my book project will discuss how the right managed to model the nature of
class identification. It was especially effective in portraying government as an
elite group that oppressed working-class people -- which is true, but the oppression
it had in mind were the functions that represented the best interests of the
working-class.
