Brecht: "No more than 80!"
Fritz Kortner:
I was then at work on a film about Garibaldi, which was in the making.
The reading I had to do in connection with this film opened my eyes to
the backward conditions of Italy. I learned about the brothels in the
seaports of Italy, frequented by sailors and seaman in such great
numbers that it was not unusual for a girl to service over a hundred
clients a day. I expressed my horror to Brecht. Brecht opined: "You
liberals say that more than a hundred is inhuman? No more than
eighty!"
