The mad cow scare hit home Saturday as a grocery store chain acknowledged
the recall of potentially tainted meat sold at its stores in five Northern
California counties, including Sacramento.
WinCo Foods said it had received and sold meat that since has been recalled
by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture because it was processed at a Washington state
slaughterhouse the same day as a cow that tested positive for mad cow
disease.

The meat was sold between Dec. 15 and Dec. 23 at WinCo Foods stores in
Antelope and Elk Grove in Sacramento County, Chico in Butte County, Yuba
City in Sutter County, Redding in Shasta County and Eureka in Humboldt
County. Orange County also has announced that more than 1,000 pounds of meat
from the lot of animals in question were recalled from A Chau Supermarket in
Fountain Valley.
