I don't see what the athletic competence of  baseball players has to do
with the value of their labor power. How much money do the TV networks,
the advertisers, and the makers of the products advertised make off of
them. Besides, I believe a huge proportion of mlb players are only in
the majors for a few years (under 5) and never get even the average
salaries. (And I believe the situation is much  worse for football
players.) Has anyone written seriously on the economics of professional
sports?

A few years ago there was fuss made about the outrageous salaries of
airline pilots, many of whom are now unemployed or working under worse
conditions for less money.
