[PEN-L:33763] Interview with Chomsky from 'Jewish Peace News'

Fwd by Tom Wodetzki:

From: "Jewish Peace News" <judithrnorman@xxxxxxxxx>
Subject: Interview with Chomsky

[In this interview, political analyst Noam Chomsky discusses the
war on terror, the arms industry, and anti-war organizing. He
argues that the notion of the Bush administration waging a war
on terror is absurd - that these are the same people who were
condemned for terrorism (unlawful use of force) by the World
Court when they directed a massive campaign against civilian
targets in Nicaragua in the 80s. He speculates on the US's
long-term plans for the Mid East, noting that war with Iran is
probably already underway - that 12% of the Israeli airforce is
in the region and, according to one report, making aggressive
flights at the border. He discusses the economic impact of the
war, explaining how military spending represents a tremendous
state subsidy for private profits of the high tech industry.

Chomsky's depressing analysis of the war is balanced by his
tremendous enthusiasm about the level of anti-war organizing
already in place. He points out that there was no public
protest over the US's massive assault on South Vietnam in the
early 60s, and that anti-war organizing only ever really
addressed the bombing of North Vietnam several years later. In
contrast, a large and well-organized protest movement is already
in place. Chomsky argues that this might not stop the assault
in Iraq, but popular resistance makes US adventurism "costly"
and that the Pentagon / State Department planners will factor in
this cost when deciding the advisability of undertaking future
aggression. - JN]
