Acknowledged. I do agree as suggested by you that articulating ideology as the manner in which people think things out is painting a picture with broad strokes.

In terms of Engels use of the words "negative economic base," I had understood - perhaps incorrectly, this concept to imply and mean the absence of any societal infrastructure and this societal infrastructure arises as division of labor. This is another broad stroke in so far as division of labor is not defined in its specificity. Perhaps I am adding to much of me into what Engels state.
