Wo. You're talking about the great American novel here. If I remember right, the "humiliation" is Tom's idea and when Huck finds out about it, he's pretty disgusted and takes off with Jim....westward. It seemed pretty clear to me that Twain means for the reader to feel disgusted by Tom.
