[PEN-L:33074] Colombian HR's go further down the toilet.
Folha de São Paulo
Colombian Congress grants judicial power to the military
The Colombian congress approved last night a law which gives judicial functions
to the Armed Forces, and will allow the military to investigate civilians,
intercept communications and make searches without obtaining judicial warrants.
However, the measure only takes force from 2005.
The proposed law had been strongly criticized by human rights organizations and
by opposition political leaders. Until now, the military only had such power
during States of Emergency, such as the one in place since August, but thanks
to the law approved yesterday these powers will become permanent.
