yes, structural racism based in US historical experience (and struggle) is more important. But:
1) it was very revealing that the official press -- and the politicians -- took so long to respond to Lott's outrage and that Democratic leader Daschle in effect apologized for Lott; and
2) in some ways, this is a "wedge issue," splitting the GOPsters. Officially, they're not supposed to be racist.
