there was an interview of someone from the Brookings Institute on U.S. National Public Radio a couple of days ago that sugested that a significant portion of the U.S. military is already privatized, including the hiring of what we euphemism-impaired would call mercenaries. To his credit, the interviewee said that there was no evidence that this program had saved any money for the government and that the hype about saving billions had turned out to be wrong.
Of course, the use of privately hired soldiers and police officers would never be allowed to conflict with the state's monopoly of the means of violence: they would have to work under the thumb of the government. (Of course, maybe they would end up as the social bases for warlords or warladies when the center can no longer hold and the U.S. collapses into bloody anarchy.)
