[PEN-L:32460] Re: Privatization of information

there was an interview of
someone from the Brookings Institute on U.S. National Public Radio a
couple of days ago that sugested that a significant portion of the
U.S. military is already privatized, including the hiring of what we
euphemism-impaired would call mercenaries. To his credit, the
interviewee said that there was no evidence that this program had
saved any money for the government and that the hype about saving
billions had turned out to be wrong.
Of course, the use of
privately hired soldiers and police officers would never be allowed to
conflict with the state's monopoly of the means of violence: they
would have to work under the thumb of the government. (Of course,
maybe they would end up as the social bases for warlords or warladies
when the center can no longer hold and the U.S. collapses into bloody
anarchy.)
