[PEN-L:28325] progressive Archbishop of Canterbury
Today in our antiquated UK system Tony Blair is to declare that the next
Archbishop of Canterbury will be Rowan Williams. Prior consultations
however have established he is very much the front runner. He has received
endorsements from Desmond Tutu, and most decisively for my perspectives,
from Richard Harries, the consistently progressive Bishop of Oxford.
At the moment William has a series of articles in the Times criticising
consumerism including Disney. He has also wanred that an attack on Iraq
might be unethical. As the Anglican Church has most of its members in
Africa, it might be expected that the new Archbishop will contribute to
campaigns for greater internationalism.
Some might consider attention to such details is so irrelevant to the task
of revolution, as to be counter-revolutionary. I think such details may be
important for the overall momentum of a society. It is about integrating
the general and the particular.
