not quite always...
yankees didn't become yankees as most know them until jacob ruppert - member of social register ny brewery family and several term member of congress - became co-owner in 1916 (his partner had gotten rich from exploitative cuban investments) and began buying players...ruppert's swan song to baseball prior to 1939 death was refusal to pay lou gehrig's *request* for $40,000 per season because ruppert claimed gehrig wasn't worth a 'penny more than $39,000 (curt flood and free agency wouldn't come along for another 3 plus decades)...
yankees would, of course, become symbol of corporate sports when cbs bought team in early 1960s...
george teinbrenner - principal owner since 1973 - was convicted for having made illegal contributions to richard nixon's 1972 presidential campaign...one of raygun's last acts as prez was to pardon gs... michael hoover
