Re: Big bourgeoisie funding of "alternate media" on the Internet
May 18, 2002
Greetings PEN-L:
Thanks to Lou for shedding light on the money trail to some "alternate
media" on the net.
On that note, in the May/June issue of Because People Matter, Sacramento's
progressive paper, we have a piece by Bay Area activist Jeff Blankfort
titled "How the Government Tried to Destroy Pacifica: The Corporation for
Public Broadcasting supported the takeover bid."
JB's lead: "Last November in Berkeley, I presented strong, circumstantial
evidence that the federal government began the operation to destroy the
Pacifica Foundation. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)
orchestrated this operation, collaborating with Pacifica officials, and
Executive Director Pat Scott, in particular."
His final paragraph: "When Scott announced her retirement, she was warmly
praised by CPB President Robert Coonrod, former deputy director of the Voice
of America and chief of Radio Marti."
JB was a founding member of Take Back KPFA radio, comprised of listeners and
former programmers after the mass purge of programmers at the station in
August 1995. He currently hosts public affairs programs on radio stations
in San Francisco and KZYX in Mendocino County.
Concerning Lou's post on "alternate media," do Penners have any info on past
or current efforts to get organized labor to fund a national newspaper for
U.S. proles? Just wondering.

I found Lou's piece very interesting. He mentioned Soros as a funder. He
is all over the place, isn't he? He funded a very good anti-drug-war
initiative in California and some very reactionary politics abroad.
