And apparently even some rather conservative people decided it was better to
back constitutional democracy than go the coup route.

Me too, here in Japan. At the start of this coup, CNN Int'l for Asia showed
some rather unconvincing footage that was supposed to give evidence that
people in the streets were overwhelmingly against Chavez (there just weren't
that many people out in any of the footage they showed). They showed
nothing, nothing, nothing about what must have actually happened, including
the swells of protests in favor of Chavez. Although everyone is supposed to
be distracted by the phony coverage of Palestine, considering that the
official US reaction to what happened in Venezuela  was more or less for the
anti-democratic forces, Bush and his State Dept. should be pinned to the
wall on this.
