Foot-and-mouth travels down to Asia

AFP

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian state has detected an outbreak of foot-and-mouth
disease and has banned the movement of cattle to all destinations from north
eastern Terengganu.

Fhaisol Mat Amin, state veterinary officer, said that the ban was to prevent
the disease from spreading to other states.

30 cows in several villages had been infected by the disease since it was
first detected last Tuesday, he was quoted as saying by Bernama news agency.

Fhaisol said the veterinary department had set up an operations room to
monitor and control the spread of the disease.

The department had not been able to establish the cause of the disease and
an investigation was in progress, he said.

Fhaisol said veterinary officers were presently vaccinating cows against the
disease in the affected areas.

Foot and mouth disease previously broke out in Terengganu in 1995.Fhaisol
urged farmers to report to the authorities if they found their animals to be
infected. The symptoms include excess saliva and loss of appetite.
