China's total foreign trade volume has touched a record $ 509.77 billion in
2001, an increase of 7.5 per cent from 2000, latest customs figures said on
Friday.

Of the total, exports were valued at $ 266.16 billion, up 6.8 per cent; and
imports totalled $ 243.61 billion , up 8.2 per cent.

The year 2001 saw a favourable balance of $ 22.55 billion, the general
administration of customs said.

In month of December 2001, the foreign trade volume grew 8.1 per cent to $
46.89 billion with exports up 11.5 per cent to $ 24.5 billion and imports up
4.6 per cent to $ 22.39 billion, leaving a favourable balance of $ 2.11
billion.

Experts said the 7.5 per cent growth in total foreign trade and the 6.8 per
cent growth in Chinese exports in 2001 were satisfactory considering the
sluggish state of the world economy, especially China's main markets in
Japan and the United States.

Meanwhile, China's total tax revenue in 2001 reached 1,517.2 billion yuan ($
182.8 billion) fulfilling the year's target by 113.1 per cent.

The figure represents an increase of 19.8 per cent or 251.1 billion yuan ($
30 billion) from the previous year, commissioner of the state administration
of taxation, Jin Renqing said.
