RE: A project for Pen-L

Part of Krugman's game is to contrast himself favorably
with anybody to his left, particularly anyone who presumes
to make pronouncements on economics. So he won't
work and play well with others. I was talking about showing
how his work deflates free trade ideology (which is also
his ideology).

There is more hope for Stiglitz on other issues, but he happens
to support free trade. He opposes much of the depredations
of the IMF and WB that have nothing to do with free trade, so
I expect he will make an important contribution. Otherwise
his view of the state is basically social-democratic. If he winds
up getting found in his car by the side of the road dead of heart
attack, I will become seriously depressed.

Most of the economists here are trying to construct a new
methodology that departs from Stiglitz in basic respects.
How much he will be willing to participate in that remains
to be seen; I doubt he will move much in that direction.

CB: If I follow, "do a number" here means augment and support Krugman's
academic work in these areas, and I would agree.

I may not quite grasp the economics profession internal politics, but my
impression is that Krugman and Stiglitz are stars, so I am thinking , let
bygones be bygones, and jump on the stars' band wagon , since they seem to
be lurching to the left. Might there be a new mini-school of thought formed
that a wide grouping of prof. economists might follow ?

Explicitly gear the free trade project to supporting their good recent
pronouncements.
