flying carpets, good postmodern imagry. But Afghanistan has had a modern
state system in place during the pre-soviet but soviet dominated
experiement, which backfired & brought on the present two decade long
killing fields. The difference is that the extension of state power into all
nooks & crannies of society & territory was limited, as will any other
system, as neither corecion nor inducement can change everything local and
embedded in tradition.
