In a time of war and economic chaos, I am saddened that this list becomes far more active in attacking one another than in attacking capitalism.
I had been meaning to ask people why there has been so little activity on the list regarding economic matters.
Why indeed! I just returned from several days' holiday absence to find my PEN-L/LBO inbox crammed with blistering internecine invective about Afghanistan, with nary a word about the continued downward trajectory of the economy. What a godsend this war was for American capitalists in distracting the public from the rapidly accumulating woes caused by the rampant speculation and overexpansion of recent years, and in providing them a scapegoat for economic deterioration going forward. It's a pity that we seem willing to join the public in being distracted from this economic story.
