Re: Mossadegh & CIA (coup of 1953 inside Iran)

It should be interesting, but it should not be taken as buttressing
various conspiracy theories. It has been an open secret from the very
beginning (even boasted of by some of its participants) that the CIA
arranged the coup. One of my basic objections to conspiracy theories is
that they confuse perception of these open kinds of conspiracy.

Capitalism and U.S. imperialism are enemies of humanity, and one needs
no more evidence of that than is provided by the front pages of the
major bourgeois newspapers. Capitalism and its mode of existence,
imperialism, are wholly open conspiracies.

Conspiracy theories revolving around the CIA simply fail to fathom the
bottomless incompetence of that agency. About 30 years ago I remember
reading a book review in the NYRB of some history of spying etc. that
included a sort of Peter principle as applied to the recruitment of
intelligence agents: those who are willing aren't competent and those
who are competent aren't willing, and even when by accident competence
and willingness coincide, the policy makers won't trust the results and
so don't use them.
