more on the end-to-end internet debate

someone recently posted an article by lessig on the end-to-end design
of the internet and how the violation of that principle by emerging
technologies is a disturbing trend (from the perspective of innovation
etc). i responded with some thoughts and mentioned the resurgence of
the end-to-end debate on ietf lists. i hunted up the archives for
links to the relevant documents and found some that may be of interest:

THE END OF THE END-TO-END ARGUMENT - david reed http://www.reed.com/Papers/endofendtoend.html

rethinking the design of the internet:
the e2e argument vs. the brave new world - clark, blumenthal
http://ana.lcs.mit.edu/anaweb/PDF/Rethinking_2001.pdf

the first link is dave reed's thoughts on the relevance of the e2e
argument and its a quick read. the second link is a 24 page paper,
which touches on some technical topics, but should be entirely readable
for non-technical folks.

i hope you find these links useful,

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- man is said to be a rational animal. i do not know why he has not been defined as an affective or feeling animal. more often i have seen a cat reason than laugh or weep. perhaps it weeps or laughs inwardly - but then perhaps, also inwardly, the crab resolves equations of the 2nd degree. -- alasdair macintyre.
