In Bloomington Normal the employers of a bunch of construction workers
gave them several days off with pay to surround the flag pole at ISU to
"protect it." They were armed with barrel staves I believe. It was quite
a sight. A ring of 50 some construction workers around the flag pole. A
ring of police around the the construction workers. They had four
demands. I can only remember two of them. One was that the university
put up an all-weather flag pole and flag, the other was that the
university fire Cox. :-) They tried for about a year but I survived,
more or less. The only "threat" to the flag pole had come from two
women, one of them 8+months pregnant, and both scared when they saw how
scared the ISU cops who came running out of a nearby building were.
Scared men with guns are scary!
I'm still pissed off -- not at the University or the construction
workers but at Weatherman for busting up SDS the preceding year. Had SDS
remained unified during the preceding school year we would have closed
the university down -- as they succeeded in doing at Southern Illinois.
