Noted Feminist Author Gloria Steinem to speak at University of Toledo
College of Law on Monday, October 1st at 8:00p.m. in the Law Center
Auditorium
The College of Law and the Humanities Institute of The University of
Toledo will present the Twentieth Annual Cannon Lecture on Monday
October 1st at 8 p.m. in the College of Law Auditorium. Gloria
Steinem, author, lecturer and co-founder of Ms. Magazine will deliver
this year's speech. Her speech will focus on several major issues
that the feminist movement faces in the 21st century. Steinem has
said the first 150 years of feminism were about establishing women's
legal identity, while the next wave of feminism is about social
equality.
Gloria Steinem is recognized as one of the foremost organizers of the
modern women's movement. She has been described as someone who has the
ability to popularize feminist issues to a wide audience. Steinem's
name is synonymous with the advancement of women's social equality in
this country. She is the author of several books including Revolution
from Within and Moving Beyond Words, a collection of essays that are
useful in understanding the rationale behind today's feminist movement.
In The importance of Un-learning, for instance, Steinem discusses the
negative aspects of a sexist educational system. Steinem states we need
to unlearn some of our respect for education, since it has undermined
our respect for ourselves. It's worth taking a little time to demystify
it.
Ms. Steinem, who spent her childhood in Toledo, Ohio, graduated from
Waite High School and magna cum laude from Smith College where she
received her B.A. degree in Education. She is co-founder of the Ms.
Foundation for Women, and a founding member of the Coalition of Labor
Union Women.
We are honored to welcome Ms. Steinem back to Toledo as a College of
Law Cannon Lecturer, said Phillip Closius, Dean of the College of
Law. Ms. Steinem defines what a Cannon Lecture Series Speaker
exemplifies a person with a unique perspective on the development
of the law and its relationship with societal and cultural change
generally.
The Cannon Lecture series was established in 1980 in memory of former
Toledo attorney Joseph A. Cannon through a generous gift from his
family and friends. The lecture series is intended to provide an
opportunity for the College of Law, the Humanities Institute, the
University and the greater Toledo community to host individuals of
national prominence who, in discussing questions of law and society,
will emphasize the humanistic dimension as well as the limitations of
our legal system.
