Re: please post and distribute

Too bad Dollars & Sense did not update the pre-print to include
disability discrimination and the vast inequality that exists between
our population and the so called able-bodied.

Just to let you know, there is a discussion going on now on a
bioethics list serve which focuses on disablement about how pwogs
include sexism, homophobia, ageism, racism but usually ALWAYS exclude
ableism in their analysis. Here is a post typical of general
sentiment on the list serve:

Diversity without Us
Yeah, it sounds like the standard 'pseudo-liberal' agenda: denunciation
of racism and homophobia, I'm surprised that ageism is included but
that would reflect Jane Elliot's own naked self interest, I imagine.

I've bought the issue of disability up in a 'liberal' discussion forum
before and it's usually ignored or one gets Peter Singer enthusiasts. In
general I find the pseudo-liberal preaching about diversity and
multiculturalism clearly doesn't include disabled people, in fact being
'progressive', for pseudo-liberals, usually means they support
euthanasia and eugenics as they feel these things are 'modern' or
represent 'progress'.

Jane Elliott to provide conference keynote

Jane Elliott, the diversity educator who initiated
the groundbreaking discrimination experience Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes, will
provide the keynote address at Diversity Summer Institute
2001.

Her talk will take place at 8 pm on Wednesday,
Aug. 1
in the Alberta Room of the U of C Dining Centre. Elliotts keynote,
"The Anatomy of Prejudice," will explore problems of racism, sexism,
ageism, homophobia, and ethnocentrism, emphasizing th responsibility
we all share for identifying and eliminating them from our environment
and ourselves.

                     Elliott developed a discrimination exercise
focusing on eye colour following the assassination of Martin Luther
King Jr. She originally intended the exercise for her all-white Grade
3 class in Iowa, but has since taken it around the world. Those who
have been through it have said it is an emotionally significant and
life-changing experience.

Elliott has been the subject of numerous
documentaries, including "The Eye of the Storm," "A Class Divided,"
and "The Eye of the Beholder." She has appeared on numerous popular
programs such as The Today Show, Donahue and Oprah.

The theme of Diversity Summer Institute 2001,
which runs July 31-Aug. 2, is Getting to the Heart of Diversity
Individual and Organizational Commitment. This years event once again
will bring together diverse community groups, business executives and
government agencies in a cooperative effort to discuss the pressing
issue of diversity in Canada.
