(again, if i already did this) robert biel's book--the new
imperialism: crisis and contradictions in north/south relations. it's
a zed press book but not too difficult to obtain in the u.s.

biel himself is a brit marxist from the maoist tradition, who was the
main author of a very useful work from the late '80s called
eurocentrism and the communist movement.

i have only given it a once over and hope in the next month to essay
a much closer reading. he writes from a standpoint which puts the
third world and unacknowleged economic sectors (women's work in the
home, the grassroots sphere) at the center of analyzing imperialism
as a world system. his basic thesis deals with the world systems
capital produces to deal with the contradictions which burgeon as the
previous imperialist world system reaches a dead end.

as i said i am reluctant to comment on biel's argument overall, but
the book is one of those which is chock full of little bits which
make you go "ooohh, that's interesting..."

anyone else on the list read it yet?
