You keep repeating this canard, but I'm working on the assumption that
people on this list have enough brains not to take any notice, so I won't
either.

You know, Doug, your glassy-eyed optimism about the American way of life and
your evident anger when it's questioned strikes an odd note. You leave the
impression that you what you really want to do is to accuse people like me
of being un-American. When I was ill with cancer I joined an oncology elist
where the other poor souls, fellow-sufferers of mine, who were mostly
American, were constantly anguishing about not only the course of thier
illness, but the fact that they'd just been made homeless, lost their jobs,
couldn't pay for vital prescription drugs, etc. When I described my own
situation-- free medical care on the NHS etc-- I was promptly accused by one
poor chap -- who was even more in extremis than me -- of being
anti-American. There was something of bathos, something tragicomic about
this. Probably this chap's bout of patriotism took him as much by surprise
as it did me. I have the same feeling about you, sometimes. Stephen Philion
keeps reassuring me that you *are* a leftist. No doubt it is true, but I
think there is still the old, old Republican Henwood struggling for air
inside you somewhere.
