Mark, I don't think you have ever read Wood. You are just assuming that
anyone who is not apocalyptic is genteel. You have nicely summarized
here the theories she _attacks_.
It may be that Marx was profoundly wrong on the necessity or possibility
of a proletarian revolution. But the assertion of that is the heart of
Wood's work. Attacks on Wood are essentially attacks on Marxism as a
possible theory of revolution.
Also, only a very small part of Wood's total output is related to
Brenner. He does not appear in _The Retreat from Class_, and it is
Williams and Thompson more than Brenner who are important in _Democracy
against Capitalism_, which is primarily a polemic against theories of
automatic revolution -- i.e., against what Lou calls "stagism." Going by
the sort of free association Lou has practiced, it would be proper to
call him a "stagist theorist" because he attacks a book that attacks
stagism.
