RE: Mises University
By the by the way way, Somehow I got on the Mises Institute mailing list, and
veryone should get their Mises Review and another thing they put out maybe Mises
Newsletter. Beside the "enemy research" angle, some of their stuff is just so
entertaining! And useful for the classroom. One thing they did once, was "In
Defense of Scrooge." I kid you not, and neither were they. The article was a
serious defense of Scrooge, giving examples how everything that Scrooge did was
really for the best for society, and that if he tried to do "good" for society,
it would end up being bad. The private vice is public virtue and private virtue
is public vice thing. It's really a classic! The Review is a slim pamphlet of
book reviews, all by David F. Gordon (I think it is F., certainly not M.!).
Again, highly entertaining. I forgot to mention that a few years back there was
some heavy in-fighting going on between the GM/NYU crowd and the Auburn crowd.
The GM crowd just wants to get along, but the Auburn crowd is pretty mean. At
some event, the Auburners were giving "bronx cheers" when GMers were mentioned
or given awards or whatever, and then an Auburner referred to the GMers as
"Austro-punks"--heavy e-mail slugfests followed on the AUST-ECON and other
lists.

It turns out there's a Mises University, in Auburn Alabama (see
http://www.mises.org/). Like Doug, they question the "newness" of the U.S.
new economy. In the spirit of von Mises, I'd bet that the university is
totally unplanned, since the professors have much more information than any
central planner could. Further, I bet they use the market to assign
grades... After all, who could be a better judge of what grade a student
deserves than the student him or herself?
