In the absence of an active (and growing) working class movement there
is a tendency for marxists to develop goofy ideas -- and such ideas
usually come in contrasting pairs (sometimes held simultaneously by the
same person). The pair here, labelled crudely, consists of (1) the
ruling class is completely unified under the direction of a centralized
general staff, and (b) there are significant splits in the ruling class
which 'we' can exploit by joining forces with the more 'progressive'
elements against the more reactionary elements. I imagine everyone
'leans' one way or the other, but a few will always embrace the full
measure of possible goofiness. :-)
