Russians' life expectancy declining
Interfax

Moscow, 4 January: If the current death rate persists in working age groups,
only 58 per cent of the young people now aged 16 will live to the age of 60,
Russia's State Statistics Committee has told Interfax.

In 1896-97, 56 per cent per cent of Russian young men were likely to live to
see 60.

At birth, life expectancy stands at 59 years among men (against 29.43 years
in 1896-97, and 63.78 years in 1961-62), and at 72 years among women
(against
31.69 years in 1896-97 and 72.38 years in 1961-62). The greatest life
expectancy was registered in Russia in 1985- 1986: 64.91 for men and 74.55
for women.

Having reached pension age, Russian men have the chance of living another 14
years - as long as they did at the end of the 19th century. The life
expectancy for women has increased by around 4.5 years.
