Re: Query onTrade, Japan, and Marx

Ali Kadri,
I deal with the questions you raise in The Amoral Elephant: Globalization and
Capitalist Development in the Early 21st Century which despite the fact that
there has been little to no publicity will be available from Monthly Review
Press in February.
I also think, while I am plugging my own books that the specificity of
infrastructure and its positive relation to Japanese postwar development is
accurate. It can be found in chapters 4 and 7 of The Postwar System: Cultural
Economy and Economic Transformation Oxford University Press and for good
messure in this shameless self promotion my thoughts on Marx relevant to the
discussion now going on on this list serv are in chapter 5, "Marx and the
Long Run" in Reconstructing Political Economy Routledge, 1999.
I point to these because Michael Perlman asked me to sign on to this list
serv and contribute to what was i gather an active Japanese political economy
discussion. i signed on in time for a personal exchange the nature of which i
did not understand but which seemed rather unpleasant. i do not want to
criticize because i have only been on for a few days but the lack of
generousity toward others in comments addressed critically to others does not
seem at all in keeping with the politics professed.
More importantly for me i jsut cannot deal with the volume pouring into my
mailbox and so am signing off, not because i don't think the list serv is
important but my time is so stretched i can't think about all the stuff
coming over. this is my problem and is not meant as criticism. i want to say
it because i think we all need to help other leftists who have questions when
we think we can within reason and i certainly would be happy off the list
serv to respond to michael or any one else where i think i can be helpful and
would hope others would be willing to do the same.
