Oh boy, what a drag! The scary thing is, my experience in academia leads me to
believe that a lot of times the accused will never even be informed and so not
have the opportunity to defend oneself or explain. mat

I think that all mail lists, news groups, chat rooms, etc. should
have at least one rule: no one should call anyone's boss just because
of an ongoing cyber-feud.  It's sad that we have to make such an
obvious thing explicit, but several years ago, a deranged troll wrote
to the OSU, with an intention of getting me in trouble.  Luckily, the
OSU dismissed his raving missives & protected me instead.
