CB: OOOOPs, you make a distinction without a difference in this case.

 Actually , the exact quote in this case is UNDERSTANDING of necessity. And for Engels, understanding is demonstrated by practice. So,  mental recognition would not be sufficient for materialists.  Mastery in practice of necessity would be required to achieve freedom.
