I'm not too up on French history.  The story I've heard is that the affair left
a big split within the elite as well as mass public opinion.  To some extent,
the Right's attachment to hawkish and reactionary policies was exaggerated due
to its desire to avenge the Left for its victory over Dreyfus.  This is said to
have cast a shadow all the way to Vichy.  But this is the popular version a
century later, and I don't know how true it is.
