This is true. However, it may be a useful warning about the impossibility
of a utopia that we shouldn't be too sanguine about. I refer to
sustainable development as a more 'environmentally sensitive' version of
business as usual. There's obviously a strategic and volatile bunch of
folks whose livelihood revolves around the publicly-subsidized burning
of fossil fuels. And one step removed, the rest of us depend on them for
the transport even of our certified organically-grown produce and
indigenous hand-woven Guatamalan handbags.
