He was trying to combat synthetic mush; and the fact is that he later
called for a "restricted historical materialism", one which
would acknowledged the autonomous significance of religious
and national ideas/feelings.

Way I see it is that when you find someone in your soup everyday
you're tempted to take some offensive shots at them.
