ANTI-FASCIST ACTION ALERT #104: National Front In Kent

Dear Friends,

Due to all the press hysteria recently whipped up against asylum seekers,
the National Front have decided to try to capitalise on the situation in
Kent. They have today (Friday) got police permission to march in Margate a
week on Saturday (8 April).

Therefore the Anti Nazi League is organising a counter protest to stop
these vermin from spreading their poisonous filth in Kent.

We are meeting at 1pm on Saturday 8 April at Margate British Rail
Station.

We hope you can make it.

ADDITIONS TO THE ARCHIVES AT ANTI-FASCISM.ORG

We've added two new documents to the archives of fascist tactical documents
at <http://www.anti-fascism.org>.

They are especially useful to anti-fascists given the number of arguments
made against the recent organizing against Yahoo for providing free
organizing services for fascist groups. Activists were berated by those
attacking the organizing. Critics claimed that attacks limiting the spread
of hate speech were useless or even counterproductive. We've heard that we
should not hold counter-demonstrations when the Klan marches because the
fascists are "only out to get attention" and our anti-fascist actions "give
them exactly what they want."

The two rightwing documents below show -- in the very words of pro-Klan
forces -- how wrong our critics are. We can read how successful
counterdemonstrations have been to demoralize the groups and sabotage their
organizing.


To Parade Or Not To Parade

"To begin with, the Ku Klux Klan hasn't been able to mount a sizable force
for any parade in the last twenty years. ... When we see the KKK of today
parade, we see two thousand armed police, national guards and federal
whatnots encompassing the fifty or so (if we are lucky enough to have that
many) klansmen marching down the street. Hordes of animal crackers come out
of their cages to spit, shake fists and signs and otherwise hoot at the KKK
marchers, Actually if I were an alien watching the event, I would assume
the KKK was being marched off to prison between ranks of soldiers to the
delight of the mobs watching. It is not a sign of strength to be able to
march while your foes delight in exposing your numbers and weakness. It is
a sign of contempt by them for you. ZOG loves to be able to take you out of
your dens and walk you like a dog so that the hooters and true haters can
have a field day seeing you in such light. ... Until we have the numbers,
parades are counter productive."

Advice For Lone Wolves

thirty years, to produce any results whatsoever, and barring some kind of
total change in economic and social conditions which might allow for the
rise of a genuine White mass movement, it would appear that our only real
hope lies in large numbers of people acting individually or in very small
groups. ... In this society, at present, to resist seriously (i.e. actually
to interfere with The Agenda in  some way) is an act of suicide. You must

The men from the ministry -- MI6: Fifty Years of Special Operations
Stephen Dorril

In 1956 Major Francis Quinn, the head of MI6's "Q" Ops Department and the
real-life version of the long- suffering boffin in the James Bond films,
was asked to inject some lethal poison into a popular brand of Egyptian
chocolates.

It did not take Quinn long to figure out what was going on - MI6 planned to
assassinate President Gamal Abdel Nasser, the troublesome leader of Egypt.
Quinn did the job, but told his section head that he was concerned that
Nasser might offer a deadly chocolate to some innocent person " was assured
there would be no danger of this in the planned precise arrangements for
donation and subsequent removal of evidence."

The chocolates were handed over, but since Nasser lived until 1970, the
arrangements must have gone wrong somewhere down the line - as a lot of spy
plots tend to do.

This is just one of the many MI6 operations Stephen Dorril describes in
this huge book on the service's history since the second world war. It is
an ambitious project. Similar but less exhaustive books have been written
either by former MI6 officers or trusted historians. Dorril is an outsider,
but he has several interesting theories.

The first is that too much attention has been paid to traitors such as
Philby, Burgess, Blake, Blunt, Cairncross and Maclean (Foreign Office), and
not enough to what MI6 itself did over the past 50 years. Next, that,
contrary to received opinion, the activities of MI6 are not as secret as it
likes to make out, and that there is more in the public domain than anyone
realised.

The first theory is a matter of opinion. I believe the focus on Philby et
al had to do with explaining Britain's post-war decline - "It wasn't our
fault; we were betrayed from within." But the second theory turns out to be
spot on.

>From a wide range of sources, many of which I have not encountered before,
Dorril paints a disturbing picture of a secret service whose power and
wideranging activities make it more a government within a government,
shaping and implementing British foreign policy towards the image of the
world it wants to see.

This is not only conservative, but anti-nationalist and anti- reformist.
MI6 was in love with the way things were before the war, saw the fight
against Nazi Germany as a mere interlude in the struggle against
Bolshevism, and believed that the spy was the guardian of all that was
great in Britain.

Dorril quotes one MI6 officer, George Young, expounding what could be
termed the spy's manifesto: "The nuclear stalemate is matched by a moral
stalemate. It is the spy who has been called upon to remedy the situation .
. . We do not have to develop, like parliamentarians conditioned by a
lifetime, the ability to produce the ready phrase, the smart reply and the
flashing smile. And so it is not surprising these days that the spy finds
himself the main guardian of intellectual integrity."

So, over the past 50 years, there they were, up to their necks in all the
main international events involving Britain - Palestine,   Greece, the cold
war, Suez, Cyprus, Iran, Africa, Yemen and the general retreat from Empire.
They recruited some of the brightest and best. They loved journalists.
There was hardly a newspaper, magazine, radio or television station without
an MI6 officer under cover or an agent working on it.

Dorril writes: "The Spectator unknowingly served as 'cover' for three MI6
officers working in Bosnia, Belgrade and Moldova." And they recruited some
important national leaders, among them, says Dorril, Nelson Mandela.

This claim should be treated with caution. Dorril carefully writes,
"Another MI6 catch was ANC leader Nelson Mandela," leaving open what he
means by "catch". Does he mean Mandela was a witting agent of MI6? Or, more
likely, that MI6 had friendly dealings with Mandela, felt it could rely on
his sympathy and so regarded him - probably without his knowledge - as "an
agent of influence"?

Morality and fair dealing did not come into it. In order to recruit a
prominent Egyptian intelligence chief, MI6 offered him valuable
intelligence about Israel. "Harming Israel's security . . . did not appear
to trouble the conscience of the British," said one Mossad officer.

Even the British judiciary was not immune. When the Americans insisted that
the traitor George Blake be heavily punished, Harold Macmillan, the prime
minister, Sir Reginald Manningham-Buller, the Attorney-General, and Lord
Parker, the Lord Chief Justice, "cooked up" between them the sentence of 42
years' jail.

Such ethics infected politicians who had anything to do with MI6. When the
Soviet shooting down of the American U-2 pilot, Gary Powers, threatened to
reveal that there had also been British U-2 flights over the USSR, George
Ward, the air minister, told MI6 that he was prepared to lie to Parliament
if he could get away with it.

Now that the cold war is over, is MI6 finished or just diminished? Dorril
says it is actually stronger and better funded than ever. Only its targets
have changed. "Ten officers in the UKB Unit at MI6 headquarters have been
running Operation Jetstream, which directs economic espionage against
France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Switzerland."

Dorril says MI6's real budget is anything from twice to five times the
official figure of £776m. And it is just as successful in seducing Labour
politicians as it has been with others. Robin Cook, the foreign secretary,
has gone out of his way to laud MI6: "I have been struck by the range and
quality of their work." If you want to compare this praise with the
reality, then read this revealing book.

Man faces death penalty in skinhead killing case

A man accused of killing two anti-racist skinheads still faces the
possibility of death after a defense motion to prevent prosecutors from
seeking the death penalty failed Tuesday.

Defense attorney Joseph Sciscento asked District Judge Michael Douglas to
toss out the possibility of the death penalty in the John Edward Butler
case, saying Nevada applies the law unfairly.

A disproportionate number of people are on Nevada's death row when the
state's population is taken into consideration, and a disproportionate
number of them are black, Sciscento argued. Moreover, the law used to get
the death penalty is overly broad.

Douglas denied the motion.

Butler, 26, is accused of shooting to death Daniel Shersty, 20, and Lin
Newborn, 25, to death in the desert west of Las Vegas July 4, 1998.

Shersty and Newborn were members of Las Vegas Unity Skins, an anti-racist
group, and Butler is reportedly the president of the Independent Nazi skins
gang.

During Butler's preliminary hearing in December 1998, a cellmate testified
that Butler confessed to the murders and gave details of the crime.

Police have also said Butler was seen near the murder scene and that the
gun used to kill the men was found in Butler's girlfriend's car.

crime," 29 Mar 00, "The Canadian government has admitted that there has
been an 11 per cent increase in hate crimes in the country in recent years,
with Toronto alone recording an alarming 28 per cent rise in 1997-98.
Federal Multiculturalism Minister Hedy Fry, at a discussion with ethnic
media, ackowledged that there had been an increase in vandalism and hate
messages, especially on the Internet. The government is concerned about
these developments and is devising a national strategy to combat hate
activities, she said. According to Metro Toronto Police, during January-
June 1999 there was a 19 percent increase in hate crimes in the city
compared to the same period in the previous year. It attributed the
increase to the spread of hate propaganda on the Internet, fax machines,

Spokane Spokesman-Review, "Seven North Idaho representatives back religion
bill," 22 Mar 00, "Lawmakers overwhelmingly passed a religion bill at the
urging of the religious right Tuesday. The bill is opposed by nearly all of
Idaho's mainstream churches. The House's 53-17 vote sends SB 1394 to the
governor's desk. Sponsors repeated claims during the House debate that a
broad coalition of churches backs the measure, although clergy from the
Methodists, Baptists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Jews, Mennonites,
Evangelical Lutherans and more have all come out against the bill."

realized that the small cross had been burned a few feet from Holmes' front

with a racial slur on the door. When Holmes saw the charred cross, she
burst into tears. 'I was thinking it was the KKK,' the 20-year-old black
woman said. 'I was terrified. I thought of all kinds of stuff: churches
being burned, bottles being thrown through windows, houses being set on

Andrew Selsky (AP), "South African white supremacist ordered to serve jail
sentence," 28 Mar 00, "A magistrate on Tuesday ordered the white 
supremacist leader of a group that randomly killed blacks to surrender and
begin serving a one-year prison term for assaulting a black man. Eugene
TerreBlanche, the leader of the radical Afrikaner Resistance Movement, must
turn himself in within a day of receiving the order from a Johannesburg
magistrate. The order was to be delivered Wednesday to TerreBlanche at his
lawyer's office. TerreBlanche had been out on bail pending appeal of his
assault conviction. On Monday, a court rejected the appeal." <1499.txt>

PFAW, "People For the American Way Foundation Hails Victory for Free
Speech," 22 Mar 00, "Public colleges and universities can use money from
mandatory student activities fees to finance campus groups that engage in
political speech that some students find objectionable, as long as the
school does not pick and choose among student groups based on their
viewpoints, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled today.  People For the American
Way Foundation filed a friend of the court brief on behalf of the

John Holland (Sun-Sentinel), "[WCOTC] Informer receives lighter sentence,"
11 Mar, "Ray Leone pistol-whipped a Jewish storeowner, lashed out at blacks
and helped bring the racist World Church of the Creator to South Florida.
On Friday, he got a lighter sentence because he helped bring down the
group's Florida leaders. U.S. District Court Judge William P. Dimitrouleas
reluctantly shortened Leone's prison sentence by 25 percent, to about six
years, after learning the tattooed white separatist had turned informant.
Leone's cooperation led to the conviction of Jody Lee Mathis, a local
leader of the Illinois-based group. Mathis then informed on the church's
national leadership, said prosecutors, who sought the reduction. The
church's membership has been virtually wiped out in Florida, with all of
the leaders and most of the followers having been convicted." <1504.txt>

Lukas I. Alpert (AP), "Marchers Protest Police Shooting," 27 Mar 00,
"Furious protesters hurled bottles and clashed with police Saturday after
the funeral for an unarmed black man shot to death by an undercover
officer, the latest police shooting to inflame tensions between Mayor
Rudolph Giuliani and the minority community. Police used batons to knock
back bottles thrown outside a Brooklyn church as the funeral Mass ended.
One officer was seen holding his head, wrapped in a bandage. In all, 23
police were injured, some suffering torn ligaments or broken bones, others
had to have shards of glass rinsed from their eyes." <1505.txt>
