actually, I translated speculatively. i don't know how you people
would translate it if you knew Turkish, but given the context of the movie
"arkadas" can be said to come closer to "comradeship", which is what I
would do, though the strict turkish meaning also seems closer to
"friendship". On the other hand, "comradeship" is said to be a
"friendship" between two or groups of "men", so it has a gender
connotation such as brotherly love, solidarity, fraternity, etc...
typically, men call each other comrade, not women, though I do use the
term since I like the original meaning. but, friendship, in the movie, is
strictly not the kind of comradeship we are talking about, because it is a
relationship between man and woman from entirely two different classes and
world views. the young woman, as she is portrayed, is not a "comrade" by
virtue of three facts" 1. she is a bourgeois 2. class enemy and 3. a
female. so they are "friends" in the bourgeois "non-sexual" sense rather
being friends in a "comrade" sense. eventually, they become
"comrades" when she converts.
