Turkish Movies, Query. (fwd)

yes, you can find yilmaz guney movies on video here. they also have
english-subtitles...i don't know if you can find "Arkadas" (Friendship)
specifically, since I had seen it back to turkey many moons ago. Guney is
both the director and the main actor of the movie. I highly recommend it
if you find. the movie is very interesting in terms of touching upon
the issues of class and gender without politically acknowleding that
it does. Guney, as the socialist figure (remember that socialist
means more than marxist per se in the periphery. it has more like leninist
and anti-imperialist connotations as "the" intellectual) faces an
identity crisis of choosing between "bourgeois" (sexual) love and
"comradely" love in his strange encounter with a young, lycee woman from
an upper class. I should say that this is central focus of the movie,
basically the moral question of whether or not a dedicated socialist
should make love to a woman that he percieves as a class enemy. Mind you
that, once, in the turkish leftist discourses, although it no longer
applies now (which it never applied anyway, but only in rhetoric), having
affairs with somebody outside your own class was considered to be dividing
class consciousness.The movie ends up in educating the woman, and helping
her to join the ranks of leftism and gain a class perspective in societal
issues..I may be sexualizing the movie though, so comrades might disagree
with me. But an excellent movie, just try to see it if you can..it was
one of the movies that sitimulated my interest in socialist feminism.

btw, brilliant socialist Guney passed away. i suspect if he would
agree with my interpretation if he were alive, since he was very sincere
in what he did as a political activist..
