5,214 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef.

true, but the water given to the cattle isn't totally wasted or destroyed. Eventually it evaporates and comes down as rain to feed the tomatoes.

BTW, what are Moby's sources? Even the HARPERS' INDEX has footnotes.
